What is DC COVID Sitters?

We are a group of medical, healthcare, graduate and undergraduate students who are trying to do what we can to support healthcare workers on the frontline during the COVID-19 crisis. As a student-led effort, our hope is to support our community by offsetting the impact of school closures and increased work demands on healthcare workers by matching workers with students who can help them. Please visit our 'about' page for more information! We look forward to working with you!

Are you licensed healthcare professionals?

No, we are medical, allied health profession, graduate or undergraduate students from local colleges/universities.

Are you licensed childcare providers?

No, we are medical, allied health profession, graduate or undergraduate students coming together, voluntarily, to provide a 'sitting' service to our colleagues in the field.

How do I get matched?

Over the last month and especially the last two weeks, we’ve seen a decline in student sitter availability as many have returned to clinical duties and other academic commitments etc. We anticipate that the reopening of DC and the surrounding areas will further reduce our pool of sitters. As of June 15th, we have begun a transition process to close our service and are unfortunately unable to take any new requests. We have grown to love our DC COVID Sitter family and it has been our honor to match students and families to help alleviate the burden that COVID-19 has put on you as first responders. If there is a second wave of the virus, we will be back and ready to help again.

Does this cost money? Are you paid to do this?

It does not cost money to get matched with a student. As the organizers, we are all volunteers. When signing up, students have the option to state whether they need compensation and healthcare workers have the option to state whether they can provide compensation. This information is one of the main ways a match will be made. Compensation is independent of the service DC COVID Sitters offers.

However, if you rely on your student to complete household management tasks (i.e. grocery shopping), please pay them in full. We cannot accept IOU's.

Is this service mandated by or affiliated with any university or institution?

No. This is an offer to help connect participating students and healthcare workers. It is completely voluntary and not an endorsement nor affiliated with any employer or academic institution. We are just a group of students, acting as private citizens, who want to help connect frontline health workers with support during the COVID-19 crisis.

Do you verify student information?

We require a .edu email address from students, and have asked students when signing up to acknowledge that they are up-to-date with vaccinations. Due to our limited workforce capacity, we do NOT perform verification of student information. Some students may have had a prior background check done by their affiliated institution. It is up to both parties to vet one another after being matched.
